Before I say what I believe about it, I'll say that first of all, I've heard a TON of people that recommend using coconut oil. On Youtube, in real life, and on every beauty website it seems to be a new trend to try using coconut oil. Use it as a moisturizer! Use it as a cleanser! Everyone went crazy with the coconut oil just a few years ago and it's still going on. It supposedly keeps your skin from producing excess oil because it balances your skin's oil production. But is coconut oil all those things that the internet claims it can be?
Nope. Not even close..
I decided to try it out a few years ago when I was dealing with acne and it made my skin very angry. I have pictures below of when I had only used it a few weeks.
I couldn't figure out why my skin reacted so badly! Everyone online claimed it was good for oily skin. I stopped using it and never really figured out why it made my skin react.
About a year later, learning about skincare at my school, I began to research the oils again. I learned so much and realized why coconut oil is absolutely NOT for your skin! Here's a simplified explanation:
1. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic. Comedogenic is a fancy word which basically means it will clog every pore on your face. There's something called a comedogenic scale that tells you how likely you are to breakout from a product. The scale goes from lowest which is 0 to 5 which is highest.
Coconut oil scores a 5 on the comedogenic scale which means it is VERY likely to clog pores and cause inflammation.
2. It's very heavy. The oil itself doesn't sink into the skin well. It sits on the surface which is one of the main reasons it clogs. Even if it wasn't comedogenic it would still be hard to work with because of the fact that it would be so greasy on the skin. Makeup wouldn't sit well on top of it.
That's my opinion about coconut oil. I will say that if you have extremely dry skin it can work for some people, but I would suggest you try to avoid it. There are better moisturizers out there! Also make sure you find the facts about trending skincare products before trying them out yourself.
